Also, while you’re here be sure to visit Nathan’s Hotdogs. Founded in 1916, the original Nathan’s Hotdogs is on Surf Avenue in Coney Island. How about a late-night cruise on the Hudson River? With Classic Harbor Line, you can go on relaxing cruises while enjoying the beautiful sights of the city including the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, and Ellis Island. One of our favorite tours is the Jazz Cruise, a 1.5-hour cruise complete with live, talented jazz musicians. This cruise is aboard the Manhattan, a stunning 1920s style yacht. A night on the water with Classic Harbor Line is most definitely a night to remember.

Museum of Modern Art

BigA and Stonebridge Let Fermented Pizza Dough Shine

Not everyone should go gluten free, but many people have discovered that consuming an abundance of gluten makes them feel less than their best. But avoiding pizza is the worst! Enter fermented pizza dough – by letting the dough ferment for 24-48 hours and eliminating the sugar that is usually used to quickly activate yeast, the pizza dough has time to ferment and develop flavor with less gluten than the typical dough. Both Biga and Stonebridge Pizza and Salad use this technique along with high quality ingredients for a superior pizza experience.

BigA sits on the corner of Clinton and Houston Streets ready to feed you all the pizza you desire. Chef Giovanni Barbieri attended Italy’s top pizza school and operated restaurants in Italy before brining his extra crunchy pizza to the US. The name BigA comes from the pre-fermented starter used in the dough that gives it its signature flavor and crunch. Barbieri uses Italian stone ground flour and imports toppings for his pies from Italy.

The dough is turned into three different dishes: Tonda, a classic round pie available in traditional or multigrain varieties; Pala, a 20-inch oval pie perfect for sharing; and Biga Crunch, a sandwich made from the same base as the Pala. All of the pies are precooked, then topped and finished to order. We suggest a Sempre Bona Tonda with prosciutto and fresh burrata and a Pala split in two – half Diavola with spicy salami and fior de latte and half Parmigiana Biga Crunch with hand crushed tomato sauce and eggplant. Don’t forget to ask for the house made hot chili oil to top your pick!

Stonebridge Pizza and Salad came to be because the owners invested in hyper-oxygenation technology that resulted in the best tomatoes they’d ever tasted. Many of the ingredients used at Stonebridge come from their hydroponic farm upstate in Schuylerville, NY. By fermenting their dough they are able to achieve a flavorful, light, and crispy crust. The fast casual setting means speed is key, and their pizzas are baked in three to four minutes. Signature pizzas include the Mushroom Fixation with mixed roasted mushrooms and truffle oil; the Spicy Hawaiian with ham, bacon, pineapple, and jalapeño; and the White Pizza with caramelized onions, bacon, arugula, and truffle oil. Make your own options as well as chef crafted salads are also available.

Emerging Music Festival Recap

On Friday, Aug 18 and Saturday, Aug 19, Bryant Park filled up with music, laughs and good vibes. Back for its third year, the Emerging Music Festival presented on-the-rise indie rock, pop and folk bands.

Come rain or shine, the show must go on, right? Even though the weather gods weren’t in the best mood Friday, they made up for it Saturday. And the little rain on Friday didn’t stop the musicians from putting on a show.

The festival kicked off Friday at 6 p.m. when Landlady took the stage. The night continued with 79.5, followed by Luke Elliot before Mail the Horse closed up the first day of the Bryant Park festivities.

Saturday presented better weather, and here musicians such as Space Captain and Maybird had Bryant Park humming with happiness.

In between sets, guests enjoyed beer and wines and grabbed bites from the local vendors curated by Hester Street Fair to enjoy on picnic blankets.

Besides the music, the festival also offered up other entertainment such as juggling and giant lawn games. A weekend with something for everyone – music, games and refreshments. What more could one need?

Fitness Friday: Outdoor Yoga

Fitness Friday is here and this week we are featuring the best outdoor yoga spots downtown. Summer is FINALLY officially here and it is the time to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather, so why not find a local yoga class and enjoy the weather while relaxing and staying active?

Downtown has searched different outdoor yoga practices offered around Manhattan, focusing mainly on the Downtown area, but added a few close by just in case you find yourself in other areas of the city.

Downtown

Washington Square Park

Each week all summer long, on Wednesdays at 8:30-9:30 a.m., Garibaldi Plaza in Washington Square Park puts on a yoga event with Sacred Sounds Yoga for FREE, courtesy of NYC Parks. Afterwards, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., your kids can also go to a free yoga class at the kids playground. Spend your Wednesdays in Washington Square Park to ensure a relaxing workout.

Battery Park

Battery Park offers two yoga sessions each week from now until August 27th by Tejal Patel of Tejal Yoga, who is dedicated and passionate. One session is on Sundays from 11:30 am to 12:30 p.m. and another is every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.. The suggested donation is $10, which goes to The Battery Conservancy.  You must RSVP to attend these sessions. Sunday mornings are for all ages while the Wednesday evening sessions are for the after-work crowd. I can vouch that this was a great class; peaceful, relaxing, and grounding. Take advantage of this opportunity to practice yoga in the beautiful Battery Park!

Citi Summer in the Square

Every Thursday, in the morning and afternoon, in Union Square Park, Citi Summer in the Square has two yoga sessions you can attend up until August 10th. To start off your day, you can attend a 7 to 8 a.m. yoga session in the South Plaza, put on by Paragon sports. Or, to end your day, you can attend sunset yoga at 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the North Plaza, with New York Health & Racquet Club. All events in Citi Summer in the Square are free. Make your Thursdays extra special by participating in these awesome events while you can!

Complete Body – Financial District

Every Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., there is a 45 minute Vinyasa yoga outside class in the Financial District location of Complete Body — located at 10 Hanover Square. It is an open level class driven to strengthen and open the body. Through different postures and certain breathing techniques, Complete Body encourages a “calm, self-awareness and vibrant energy.” Complete body requires a membership.

Held at the Hudson Park Fountains, in Hudson Park (between W 34th and W 35th, 10th Avenue and 11th Ave), they are reaching out to all different levels and only require you to bring a mat. The Bryant Park Corporation has announced the schedule for its performing arts series, Bryant Park Presents. Now celebrating its second year, the series aims to be the most accessible venue in New York City to experience a wide range of extraordinary artists in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The season begins this Friday, Apr. 21 with actors performing some of Shakespeare’s greatest villains, and ends Sep. 15 with New York City Opera singers performing music by Giuseppe Verdi. In between, Bryant Park Presents stages dozens of unusual and diverse cultural events including a thousand-person polka party (May 17), contemporary dance superstars Martha Graham Dance Company (Jun. 23) and Limon Dance Company (Jun. 30), a series with more than 100 accordionists, a boundary-breaking classical and jazz music festival (Aug. 4 and Aug. 5), and three full-length productions of Shakespeare plays.

Brand new this year, Bryant Park lends out over 100 free picnic blankets every Friday (May 12 through Sep. 15) between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM. The goal is to make having a picnic on a summer evening and enjoying a cultural event as easy and as comfortable as possible. At each of the 17 Friday Picnics that the Hester Street Fair curates, exciting local food vendors, wine and beer is available for purchase, and Bryant Park Presents provides music, theater, and/or dance entertainment.

All shows are free to the public with no dress code, no barriers to entry, no tickets and most importantly: no lines. With a lush green grass lawn that comfortably accommodates thousands, visitors can spread out and enjoy the summer without stress and with the promise that there’s a seat for everyone.

Discussing the season, Ethan Lercher, Executive Producer of Bryant Park Presents, said: “It’s never been easier to experience the amazing quality and exciting variety of music, theater, and dance in New York City. Bryant Park Presents brings world-class artists to a beautiful park at no cost to the public. And if you haven’t been to a ballet before, see it in Bryant Park. If you’ve never seen Shakespeare, experience it in Bryant Park. It’s an inviting space and there’s something incredible happening for everyone.”
