Daniel Dunlow & Russ Kaplan talk The Green Room 42 & more

Opened last month in the heart of the Theater District, The Green Room 42 is an immersive 130-seat state-of-the-art entertainment venue. It not only offers audiences the chance to see some of their favorite performers up close and personal, but it also offers a food menu designed by Chef Gabriel Israel of the adjacent restaurant Green Fig. Beyond the food and entertainment, cocktails, craft beer and wine are also offered. Yes, all on the fourth floor of the YOTEL.

Since its Mar. 5 opening, plenty of major Broadway performers have taken to the stage of The Green Room 42. This includes Constantine Maroulis, Lillias White and Alice Ripley. A change of pace from the top stars of the stage, The Green Room 42 also offers a “Bottomless Brunch” on Sundays, featuring the undewear-clad singing duo The Skivvies, dishes from the aforementioned Chef Gabriel and 90 minutes of unlimited prosecco drinks.

Downtown had the pleasure of speaking with Daniel Dunlow, The Green Room 42’s Program Director, and Russ Kaplan, who will be performing at the venue on Apr. 30 at 8:00 PM. More on Russ can be found at www.russkaplanmusic.com, while The Green Room 42 can be visited via www.thegreenroom42.com.

Why was The Green Room 42 launched?

Daniel Dunlow: The Green Room 42’s owner Gil Rubenstein operates all the food and beverage outlets at the YOTEL NYC, including modern Israeli restaurant Green Fig and rooftop lounge Social Drink & Food, which both opened last year. For the final piece of the project, Gil transformed the hotel’s event space into an entertainment venue where guests could watch performances in an up-close and personal setting. Although New York City has a lot of theaters and music venues, he found that there weren’t many intimate rooms that offer Broadway level performances at a wallet-friendly price.

How would you describe the venue to someone who hasn’t yet been there?

The Green Room 42 is a new, funky, urban take on the classic New York cabaret scene. It’s Frank Sinatra meets Sia, which is exactly the aesthetic of the room. As for the business model, it’s centered around value and hospitality. That means just one show a night, spacious seating and no food or beverage minimum ever. Come as you wish and stay for as long as you like — you’re our guest. We pride ourselves on offering a lower ticket cost than anywhere else in town, and all the while paying the acts fairly. It’s all about the experience: great food, drink and creative entertainment. Broadway stars are coming out of the woodwork to perform at this venue, and they’re also flocking in to see the shows; so you never know who’ll you’ll run into in the crowd.

What does the venue name mean? Is the 42 related to the street?

DD: A “green room” is the space in the theater that is between the dressing rooms and the stage. It’s where actors hang out before they go onstage. It’s a place on Broadway where you get to see Simba from The Lion King in full lion costume and makeup, but playing Candy Crush on his phone. That’s exactly what cabaret is to me: It’s a space where the artist is live in front of you, but being a human being and not playing a part. They are comfortable and personable, telling stories, laughing, joking and kidding around. That’s what you get in the green room and at The Green Room 42. As for the “42,” it was added so people knew where to go: 42nd Street.

Do you have a favorite item on the menu? Is there a full menu offered during all shows?

DD: We offer a full menu during every show at The Green Room 42. We have everything from artisan pizza to an unreal schnitzel burger. My personal favorite are the steamed mussels with garlic and white wine sauce that are served for the table to share. They are absolutely addicting. They’re meant to be shared at the table, but if you’re sitting with me, we will not be sharing them — I will be eating them all by myself. (laughs)

What was the first show you booked there?

DD: The first show I booked here was Lillias White, the Broadway legend from The Life, Dreamgirls, Fela! and Hercules. She sold out her Valentine’s Day show here. She’s already returned for a second show with a packed house. While she was signing her first contract, I got the impulse to have her sign two copies just so I could keep a copy of her autograph.

Russ, for someone who hasn’t seen you live before, what should be expected?

Russ Kaplan: “Theatrical Psychedelic Party Jazz.” For this show we’re ransacking the Broadway canon — from both classics and new shows — to find new exciting twists on familiar tunes. It’s mostly instrumental with the occasional stealth vocalist.

Who’s going to be onstage with you?

RK: My band, the massive and massively-awesome Russ Kaplan +7: me on keyboards, Moppa Elliott on bass, Wayan Zoey on drums, Tom Gavin on guitar, Christoph Knoche on reeds, Kyle Saulnier on more reeds, Eric Biondo on trumpet, and Brian Adler sitting in on percussion. Plus of course special guests Justin Guarini and beatboxer Chesney Snow, both from In Transit.

Do you have a favorite song to perform live?

RK: So far, “Poinciana.” We haven’t played these Broadway songs yet, but I’m pretty psyched to jam out on some Phantom; I don’t want to give away which song.

Where was the first live show you ever performed in New York?

RK: First show with my band was at the Douglass Street Music Collective in Brooklyn, at my 29th birthday. First performance of any kind as a New Yorker, at Arlene’s Grocery, beatboxing to “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” at a Motown tribute show.

Russ Kaplan aside, any upcoming shows you’re especially excited for?

DD: I’m really stoked to get Telly Leung in here. He’s such a genuine guy with a love for the arts. I can’t wait to see what he brings to his solo show. Also, there are some shows in the works right now that I can’t yet speak about, but they’ve got me very excited—you’ll hear about them soon.

The Green Room 42 show aside, Russ, what’s coming up for you career-wise?

RK: Lyricist Sara Wordsworth and I are finishing the latest draft of our new musical Minnesota. Hi, producers!

When not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

DD: Free time? I go see theater, but I consider that research. I’m a huge fan of Broadway. I love seeing current shows, watching YouTube clips of old shows and collecting Broadway memorabilia. Some of my prized possessions are a signed Ethel Merman Gypsy playbill, a signed Mary Martin headshot, Billy Porter’s eyelashes from Kinky Boots, and my hall of Tyne Daly memorabilia — I’m obsessed with Tyne Daly. My apartment is like a museum of Broadway. I recently bought the original grand piano from Don’t Tell Mama, one of New York’s first true cabaret clubs. This is the piano that they had in their club since day one. I played it when I performed my very own first cabaret there five years ago. This piano, which is now in my bedroom, is the piano that all the greats like Liza Minnelli and Bernadette Peters sang on, and shows like RENT and The Last 5 Years were written on this piano late at night in the piano bar. I’m a pianist and composer myself, so I spend some free time tickling the ivories and performing around town. So as for free time, I’d say roughly six hours of my day are spent sleeping, and then the other 18 are for theater stuff.

RK: Hanging with my wife and daughter. Watching BBC nature movies.

What’s the last concert you attended for fun?

RK: The Jayhawks.

DD: I love pianos and I love music, so I obviously love the Piano Man. I went to see Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden again last month. That was my fifth time seeing him. That guy knows how to do it.

Finally, any last words for the kids?

DD: A wise man once told me that there are many different llamas that take you to the top of “Mt. Great Entertainment.”

RK: You don’t want kids following my advice.

Legendary photographer Bob Gruen talks downtown living

Bob Gruen is not only one of the most famous rock photographers, but one of its most prolific as well. If you’ve seen a photo of John Lennon wearing a “New York City” t-shirt, Bob took it. If you’ve seen a photo of Led Zeppelin standing in front of an airplane with their logo on it, Bob took that one, too. He has captured countless iconic images over the past five decades that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing on posters, shirts and the pages of books.

As a 50-year resident, Bob Gruen’s name is practically synonymous with downtown New York. Thanks to Carol Klenfner’s connection, I had the opportunity to conduct a Q&A with Gruen about his past, present and future, garnering a rare look at the man behind the lens. His work ethic is to be admired, and his “last words” are inspiring to all, not just to photographers. Much of Gruen’s classic work has recently been reissued, but there is a permanent display at Edition Hotel at 5 Madison Ave. [Editor Note: This article originally appeared in the Spring 2016 issue of Downtown Magazine.]

What was your first paying gig as a photographer?

Bob Gruen: I lived with a rock band [Glitterhouse] in the ’60s, and when they got a deal at Atlantic Records, they used my photos for their publicity. Atlantic then hired me to shoot Tommy James and the Shondells, when they were opening at a presidential rally for Hubert Humphrey.

 What is it that you like most about living downtown?

BG: There is less traffic, and it’s quieter, because most of the streets are shorter and smaller than uptown, and the buildings are lower, so there’s more sky. But we’re close to everything going on in the city.

When did you first move downtown?

BG: I moved to Sullivan Street in June 1965, and I thought the Feast Of St. Anthony was a great welcome. I’ve lived in the West Village since 1970.

What is it that keeps you living in Manhattan, as opposed to moving to L.A.?

BG: I’m not moving to L.A., because I’d only last a few days there! The sun is nice, but it’s way too spread out, and there is so much traffic, it takes hours to get anywhere, and when you meet someone in L.A., they say, “How are you doing?” In New York they say, “What are you doing?” I like to be doing things.

Is your neighborhood on the verge of becoming another SoHo?

BG: I think the West Village is becoming another SoHo with high-priced shops and luxury condos, but I’m not ready to move. 

Do you have a favorite venue in Manhattan for photo shoots? Or at least a favorite for concerts?

BG: I don’t really have favorite venues where I take photos, but I always like to see shows at the Beacon [Theatre], because it’s such a beautiful theater, and the sound is good. Past favorites were Max’s [Kansas City], The Bottom Line, CBGB’s and Don Hill’s, all now gone. But now, I think, for a club, I like Bowery Electric.

To you, is music good these days? Or are the best days of pop and rock behind us?

BG: I usually think the best day is today. You can’t go back, and I find good music all over town.

In October, your book on John Lennon was re-released. How does it compare to the original release?

BG: The new edition of John Lennon: The New York Years has a new cover and 16 new pages with 24 photos not published before.

Do you feel that there are any misconceptions about John? Or is there something you wish more people knew about him?

BG: John was very open about his life; I don’t think there are misconceptions. If people really want to know about John Lennon, they should read the last two interviews he gave — the BBC interview by Andy Peebles and the Playboy interview by David Sheff — both available as books. John expressed himself very clearly and had learned a lot from his five years of raising Sean [Lennon].

Do you have any exhibits in the works? Or any other books?

BG: There is a new permanent installation of 45 of my photos in the Billiard Room [in the Clocktower Restaurant] at the new Edition Hotel on 24th Street. This year, I released a new book of photos of Yoko Ono, See Hear Yoko, and there was a reissue of…The Clash. Photographs by Bob Gruen….My large 500-photo monograph, Rock Seen, is now in its 4th printing. I’m currently working on an autobiography.

Is there anyone you haven’t yet photographed but still hope to?

BG: I’ve met many very interesting people, and I can’t say there is anyone special I can think of I’d like to photograph. But I go out all the time, and I’m always happy to meet new people.

If a person were thinking of getting into photography as a proper hobby, is there a particular camera you’d recommend to start with?

BG: The camera doesn’t matter as long as you’re comfortable with it; they all do mostly the same things. It’s what you do with it that matters.

Is there a photograph or a particular shoot that you’re most proud of? Or see as your biggest accomplishment?

BG: I don’t like to list “favorites,” but certainly my photo of Tina Turner. Catching multiple images in one shot is a good one, and the world’s favorites — my John Lennon in the New York t-shirt or Led Zeppelin in front of the airplane — are pretty good, too.

When you’re not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?

BG: I’m busy with my career most of the time, but I like to travel and visit with my family and grandchildren now.

Finally, Bob, any last words for the kids?

BG: I always tell people that if you take a lot of pictures, you’re bound to get a good one, and if you only show the good ones, people will think you’re good. Other than that, learn from the past, look to the future, but live in the present.

Frances on her Mar. 27 show at Joe’s Pub, her new album for Capitol Records & what’s coming up

2016 was a breakout year for critically-acclaimed singer/songwriter Frances in her native England. Following the success of her 2015 single “Grow,” Frances was nominated for both the BBC Sound Of 2016 and the BRITs Critic Choice Awards. She also performed at major music festivals and her music was streamed over 100 million times.

2017 is shaping up to be Frances’ United States breakthrough as last month brought the release of her contribution to the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, “What Is Love?” Mar. 17 is the release date for Frances’ debut full-length, Things I’ve Never Said, as featuring collaborations with Greg Kurstin, Jimmy Napes and Howard Lawrence. In support of Things I’ve Never Said, Frances returns to New York for a Mar. 27 performance downtown at Joe’s Pub.

Will this Joe’s Pub performance be your first ever gig in New York?

Frances: I’ve played a couple of shows there before. At Rockwood [Music Hall] and the Mercury Lounge. They’ve made me so excited to come back and play again because I find New York such an inspiring city!

Have you ever traveled to New York for pleasure?

Frances: Sadly, no. But it is a serious plan! I absolutely love it. I could definitely live there!

Is there a New York destination you hope to visit on this trip? Any favorite restaurants here?

Frances: I’m going to have to wander down Fifth Avenue, that’s a must. I’ll stop into Katz’s Deli — it would be rude not to — but I really want to do The High Line walk!

At what point in your career did you become just “Frances?”

Frances: At the very beginning, I think. My full name is Sophie Frances Cooke. But I really wanted a one-word artist name, and I felt “Sophie” looked a bit young on paper — lots of curly letters! Whereas Frances is more angular and I found it really fun to have a different name to walk onto stage with. It helped with stage fright at the very beginning.

Do you have a favorite single-named musician?

Frances: Gosh. Adele, Prince, Beyonce, Björk — the list goes on!

Do you have a favorite song on Things I’ve Never Said?

Frances: Probably “Grow.” It’s the first song I ever released so it feels very special to me. But I also love it as a song because I’ve never written a chorus melody like that since. It’s quite bizarre but works somehow!

What was the first song you recorded on Things I’ve Never Said?

Frances: I think that was also “Grow,” because I recorded it for my first EP. But of the new songs on the album, I think we started with one called “Don’t Worry About Me.”

Are there leftovers from the Things I’ve Never Said sessions? Around how many songs were written for the album?

Frances: So many leftovers! I think I wrote somewhere between 100 and 150 songs in the end. There are a couple that I’ve already put aside for my second album, though. I loved them but they were a little too mature for my first album. When I wrote them I knew straight away that they were for my second album!

How did you wind up working with Greg Kurstin? Was that an introduction from your label? Did you know of his band The Bird And The Bee?

Frances: It was an introduction from my label, yes. A very lucky introduction indeed! It was one of my favorite writing experiences ever, he’s just incredible. And yes! Not until after our session, but I absolutely love the music. I think my favorite is “Will You Dance?”

Touring aside, what’s coming up for you in 2017?

Frances: I’m touring a lot, which is very exciting! I’m also doing some writing for other artists, which I absolutely love. I’m working on some potential collaborations which is seriously fun. I’d love to write for some more movies after my 50 Shades Darker experience, and I’ll be scheming for my second album! It’s going to be a fun year, I think.

When not busy with music, how do you like to spend your free time?

Frances: Hilariously, music! I always play music in the house, whatever I’m doing really. My family have some beautiful dogs so I love spending time with them, and my family, of course! I love going to the theater, watching movies, watching 10 episodes of Criminal Minds in one sitting. I love cooking, too. Normal stuff, really!

What was your favorite album on 2016?

Frances: Oh, that’s tricky. I love the 1975 album, Chance The Rapper, Beyoncé, Drake, new Radiohead. So many. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Lemonade.

Finally, Frances, any last words for the kids?

Frances: Stay in school and follow your dreams!

Downtown is proud to premiere the music video for “Love Lion” by the U.K.-based Uncle Frank; the track will be featured on the forthcoming Love Lion album due out in March.

Uncle Frank, a band which mixes soul, funk, rage and love, is comprised of multi-instrumentals and producers Frank Benbini and Naim Cortazzi. The group has garnered airplay from BBC6 Music and BBC Radio 2, and has gotten recent coverage in The Sun, The Daily Star and Spindle Magazine. Uncle Frank released its debut album, Smile For Miles, in May 2014 as part of a three-album deal with MITA Records. Frank and Naim recently hit the road with UB40 for a U.S. tour, which included an on-stage duet with UB40’s Ali Campbell on Prince’s “Purple Rain” in New Jersey.

Said multi-instrumentalist/producer Frank Benbini, who is also one-third of the acclaimed New York band Fun Lovin’ Criminals: “New York City is my second home, I miss the place every day. I had two apartments over the years, first in Manhattan, second in Brooklyn. Love the food and my New York City friends and family — and the hustle, the New York hustle.”

The event began with cocktails and conversation which was followed by lunch and finally, the interview. “Digital marketers should focus on the behaviors that led to the click, than the click attribution,” Norman said.

Norman’s comments were  as clever as it was inspiring. People who work on Social Media live an intense up and down romances with Social Networks and  Norman plays the perfect couples therapist.

This Luncheon event was just the first one of many planned by the IAANY in the coming weeks including, a  Young Professional Workshop on April 15th, with Bruce Brandfon of North America Puclicitas, and the 2014 Global Marketing Summit on April 24th, with panelists such as Susan Hammes of American Express, and Ben Jankowski of Mastercard. The theme will be, “Finding the right balance between man, money, media and machine.”
