The Cutest Dog Costumes in All NYC, Ranked

Barktoberfest 2019 is over; everybody won. Well, we all got to see adorable dogs in great costumes, but only some of those dogs won prizes. Over the course of the evening, ten top dogs won nine prizes for their puppy parents. It was a tough competition, but it wasn’t because of the rain; our judges had to choose between more participants than ever before! More than 80 pups and 200 people showed up for Downtown’s biggest Barktoberfest event.

The Event

On October 29th, hundreds of pups and people descended on the Seaport at Pier 17 for Barktoberfest, a canine costume party celebration. The event was hosted by Downtown Magazine and POOCHI NYC. Downtown Magazine’s Pawblisher Barclay publishes his own column in the magazine. POOCHI NYC is a professional dog-walking service offering memberships to NYC Pawrents with pooches at home.

The event featured snacks, “BarkTinis,” and more, including snacks from Industry Kitchen, Grandaisy Bakery, and Insomnia Cookies.

Sponsors included: Downtown Magazine, POOCHI NYC, Seaport District NYC, Social Tees Animal Rescue, Four Seasons, SYNLawn, BARK, Frédéric Fekkai, WellPup, Worth Street Veterinary Center, Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams, Pet Plate, Tribeca Grill, Zoo Snoods, and Insomnia Cookies.

The Competition

A group of seven expert judges chose winners for 6 categories and three runners up, with prizes for all.

The Winners

We know this is why you’re really here: the puppy pictures. We don’t blame you.

Our Runners Pup:

Runners up received a one-year subscription to Downtown Magazine. For one year, they will able to learn about all of the cool stuff happening downtown, and their furry friends can learn about local doggie do’s with Barclay’s Spot.

Our first runner up was dressed as General Leia, our favorite Disney princess.

7th Place

Our 7th place winners were a tag-team, a pair of partners. These army pups won their owner a gift basket from Eatily.

6th Place

This went to a pair of owners, and one adorable infomercial of a pup. This chia pet won its owners a trip to the Fabio Doti Salon on Wall Street.

This pet really grew on our judges.

5th Place

This next pup was a Prime choice for 5th place. This Amazon Prime Pup won our hearts, as well as a Gift Certificate for Worth Street Veterinary Center.

This dog delivers joy to your heart in two days or less.

4th Place

This princely participant won his owner a hair makeover from Fredric Fekkai with David Cotteblanche.

3rd Place

Our third-place winner was also our “funniest costume.” It makes a lot of sense–this pup is a real joker. Pepper won himself a beautiful new dog bed from MGBW.

2nd Place

Our second-place winner is also competing in another contest, a heated political bout that won this dog “Best Headline-of-the-Day” costume. Bernie Sanders himself came down to the competition, looking a little furrier than usual, to collect a dinner for four at the Tribeca Grill.

1st Prize

First prize went to a repeat pup. Last year’s winner (she was a fortune teller) returned as a grandma. If you think the costume is impressive, you should have seen her walk her walker on her hind legs. This walker-walking pup’s parent will walk away with an overnight stay at the Four Seasons.

Some Other Highlights

See the Statue of Liberty on a Classic Harbor Line Voyage

Written and Photographed by Addison Franz

Set sail this summer with Classic Harbor Line and see the beauty of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and more aboard one of their many breathtaking boats.

Barclay enjoying a luxury seat right next to Capt. Chris

I joined Downtown Pawblisher Barclay Hudson on a 3:30 pm cruise on the deck of the 80-foot-long Adirondack, which was manned by Captain Chris and his crew. Although dogs are not typically allowed on CHL trips, they make an exception for him whenever he wants to go out on the water.

During our relaxing two-hour getaway, we had a perfect sea breeze and were provided three complimentary beverages. We were up close and personal with Lady Liberty, accompanied by calming waves.

Midway through our trip, the crew put up a rainbow-patterned flag to mark the beginning of Pride Week, as CHL is in full support of the LGBT community.

Whether you’re a New York local or just visiting, don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to see some classic sights.

Classic Harbor Line offers cruises at 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm aboard the Adirondack with a base price of $52 and voyages on other boats for varying prices.

Barclay is the face of all pups in Lower Manhattan, which means he always has to be groomed to perfection. After being groomed at Le Pet Spa, Barclay has been catching the eyes of many on the Financial District streets. Although he is always considered an adorable show stopper, his new cut and clean coat is better than ever. Conveniently located in Battery Park City, Le Pet Spa is the best place to fulfill your every Pet need. Previous owner, Robert Concister, has served Downtown pet lovers and the furry companions for years. He is now passing his business over to to Phil Castiglia. Both have great hopes of expanding business and convenience for the Downtown community.

Le Pet Spa supplies everything the Downtown area needs from collars to wee wee pad to almost every food brand. If they do not carry what you are looking for, they try their best to accommodate your needs. They accept orders via phone and fax which they deliver daily throughout the Battery Park City Area. Castiglia explains, “We are looking to expand our reach. Although we specialize in dogs, we are looking forward to working with cats just as much.”

The luxurious grooming services at Le Pet Spa left Barclay looking cleaner and more handsome than ever! These services are appointment only and offered 7 days a week, for customer convenience. Le Pet Spa’s grooming staff is unbelievably talented, friendly, and gentle with all pets. Not only are they extraordinary groomers, but their service even includes a pick up and drop off service in BPC and across the highway and North End Ave. Castiglia states, “We feel we have excellent groomers, which is motivating us to expand our reach.”

Le Pet Spa also offers surprise daily specials along with grooming services including nail clippings, facial touch ups, gland cleaning, and brush outs to maintain your pet’s appearance between haircuts and baths. They also groom cats, which is very uncommon in this area. Le Pet Spa aims to please, meet the needs of their customers, and the customer’s pets. “Our mission is to serve this neighborhood, whether we are dog sitting, dog walking, or dropping off food. Our job is to take care of animals.”

Castigla wanted to be a veterinarian his whole life, but could not afford the necessary schooling at the time. He began working and became Senior Vice President of a of large company. Now that he has had so much success he has retired and is doing what he loves most – working with animals. “From a young age I spent time with my Aunt who bred border collies which inspired me to volunteer for animal societies and shelters all my life.” Castiglia is living out his dreams as the new owner of Le Pet Spa with the goal to enhance the life of animals in Lower Manhattan.
