HelloTittie’s Creative Chicks Art Event Uplifts Women Making Art

Art is a powerful tool that can give meaning to different aspects of life one would not expect, from relieving trauma and tension in an artist’s life, to making political and social commentary on the state of current events. Some artists describe art as having the ability to embrace love and uplift others, or being able to release one’s feelings and be vulnerable with oneself, as well as an audience.

These were all sentiments expressed by artists at HelloTittie’s 3rd Annual Creative Chicks Art Event over the weekend. As a brand committed to empowering women through creative online content, insightful interviews, and curated art events, HelloTittie provided a platform for over 20 women to showcase their work to a greater audience.

The event took place at Beyond Studios NYC in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn with collections of work expanding various art forms, ranging from portrait photography, canvas paintings, and even a film screening. Artists filled the open space, engaging with other creatives about their work, drawing inspiration for future projects, and preparing to have their work sold to an eligible buyer.

Artwork by Chelsea Smith

One artist that stood out from the rest was a model by the name of Flora Dizon. She began modeling in preschool when a photographer came out to her school to take photographs of some of the children. Initially, her parents were shocked by the outcome of how well the photos came out and how comfortable their daughter was because she was always the shy child who kept to herself. She said whenever the camera was in front of her, she was “able to become a whole other person. And I think it was because I wasn’t directly looking into someone’s eyes, I was just looking at a lens. I didn’t feel like people were staring at me. I felt like I was able to be myself.”

It wasn’t until after she graduated high school and started freelance modeling that she expressed an interest in being a nude model. A photographer at the time asked if she could pose nude and make shapes using her body, while captured using low lighting to appear as a silhouette. She was blown away by the photos because she fell in love with the artistic quality in it – being able to release all her bottled up emotions and feeling completely vulnerable and empowered simultaneously.

With her own art, Dizon implores her audience to feel more self-confident in themselves, in their bodies, regardless of wrinkles, stretch marks, or curves. “I just want people to be more open to being in their natural state and being open to show who they are without having to always hide themselves.”

At the event, Dizon wore a purple bodysuit and rhythmically moved her body to the tune of her friend Maria Burgos’  spoken word poetry. Burgos’ pieces were received with cheers and snaps from the crowd as she performed a piece describing the many labels placed onto her as a woman, and an improvised self-reflection on how she felt that day.

She first discovered spoken word after her brother approached her one day and said he would write the first few lines of her first rap, but that she’d have to finish the rest. The first few lines started off as “My name is Maria, I’m worth more than gold” and she went ahead and finished the rest of the rap. She found so much satisfaction in her writing that she started to purchase journal after journal and fill them up with all her thoughts.

Down the line, her work adapted into a means to vocalize her written thoughts about politics and being a woman, because “I spent so many years not speaking up in any kind of scenario that you can think of, and I wanted to speak up through my art because it’s so powerful.”

Marisa Silva, a photographer from Phoenix, AZ but now living in NYC, didn’t originally find her love for art with photography, instead, it was music. All her life, she grew up playing music and had every intention of pursuing it as a career up until four years ago when she permanently damaged her voice. She had lost her voice three time back in 2015 and instead of taking a break from expressing herself artistically, she picked up photography. She had always grew up with cameras and photography throughout her life, but it wasn’t until her break from music inspired her to take it more seriously.

Silva said that she hasn’t found the right moment to integrate her passion for music and photography into one yet, but pointed out that every photo on display at the event is named after a song title. One photo was entitled “Golden Hour” after a Kacey Musgraves song and was taken during the golden hour as the sun setting.

In between admiring the artwork and interacting with the artists, guests were able to take advantage of additional amenities offered at the event. For refreshments, HelloTittie offered an open bar for its guests, with drinks from Harmless Harvest, Monster Energy Drink, and Drink BABE. Guests were also invited to engage in the Instagrammable photo space across the room, decorated with an array of balloons, a kiddie pool, and beach balls shaped like boobs. Throughout the night, artists participated in live painting segments in the middle of the studio space. Guests also had the chance to win raffle giveaways from sponsors like Aya’de Health & Beauty, Magic & Manifest, Rosehound Apparel, Idlewild Co., and Kelliebrew.

It was a special night to be celebrating women with various backgrounds and connections with art, all in one space – it was impactful. Now artists and art lovers will have to wait another year to see a fresh batch of phenomenal work.

Searching For Snark At Hudson Yards: Snark Park

As New Yorkers, when we think of the word ‘snark’ we think of attitude. Snark is bold, and so are we. It’s difficult to believe that there’s more than one meaning to the term, but one local organization has built its whole philosophy around the alternative. In Lewis Carroll’s ‘The Hunting of the Snark’, it referred to an inconceivable creature hunted by an unlikely crew in what seemed to be an impossible task.

For 10 years, Snarkitecture has been the collaborative design practice hunting for the undiscovered. Their pursuit of the fantastical led them to reinterpret the ordinary world and create engaging, unforgettable moments. So on Friday, March 15th, 2019, Snarkitecture will be ready to show New York their next big foray into this sensory frontier: Snark Park.

Snark Park

Immersive Installations Rotating Through Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is largest private real estate development in U.S. history. It’s also the largest development in NYC since Rockefeller Center. The project aims to be the next up and coming neighborhood in Manhattan. Because it’s a mix between residential and commercial space, a permanent exhibition area is just what it needs to really pop.

Snark Park will be located in the Shops and Restaurants at 20 Hudson Yards and will host museum level installations and a cycle of powerful partnership programming. With a tri-annual exhibition schedule, Snark Park will bring the world of design to a wider audience by introducing playful and thought provoking environments. By rearranging the everyday into something exceptional, Snark Park aims to challenge viewers to rethink and explore the ordinary.

High End And Exclusive Partnerships

Snarkitecture Partners
The partners behind Snarkitecture

Building on the buzz of their prior installations THE BEACH (2015), and FUN HOUSE (2018), Snarkitecture has plenty going for them. That momentum has brought them together with cutting edge collaborators like Calvin Klein, COS, Design Miami and more that they will continue to work with in their new New York space.

Progressive retail establishment KITH Treats is entering an exclusive partnership with Snark Park to provide limited edition objects. KITH TREATS is just one of many brand deals that bolsters the diversity of Snark Park. And with an online presence created and powered by Squarespace, it’s only a matter of time until Snarkitecture pulls in the rest of the world.

Snark Park’s Future At Hudson Yards

Snarkitecture Partner Daniel Arsham says “Our aim has always been to create architecture that performs unexpectedly, to explore the edges of art and architecture. With Snark Park we hope to encourage visitors to reconsider their built environment with childlike wonder.” With food and drinks  on-site, a compelling lineup of partners and the pedigree that comes with Snarkitecture, Snark Park is poised to exceed Arsham’s expectations and become the next big thing in Hudson Yards.

The wait until March may seem like forever now, but tickets for timed entry go on sale on Thursday, Janurary 31st 2019. Until then, you can sign up for updates at their website. So open your eyes to the possibilities Snarkitecture can show you and sign up today!

Street Art Gallery Graces 69th Floor of 4 World Trade Ahead of Spotify Move-In

Bradley Theodore, Coming To America

A project nearly a year in the making, 4 World Trade’s street-art inspired gallery on the building’s 69th floor is finally finished. The exhibit will feature the work of over 50 artists from New York, and around the world, in a variety of mediums.

Stickymonger, Cosmic Tower

ART4WTC is a dramatic and shift in style for the Silverstein Properties artist residency program, which they have used to decorate their unleased spaces for around the past 15 years. The idea for the art project was born when Silverstein Properties Chief Marketing Officer, Dara McQuillan, viewed a display of similar work at World Trade Gallery, and offered curator Doug Smith the opportunity to turn the 69th floor into a giant canvas.

Layer Cake + Belowkey, Joe LaPadula, Jenna Krypel, Beautiful Cleanup

Smith jumped at the chance, and since June 2016, the space’s barren cement interior has been transformed into a kaleidoscope of color propelled by each artist’s enthusiasm for their craft. The project not only seeks to revitalize the Lower Manhattan art scene and elevate street art from its humble beginnings, but also celebrate the Financial District’s progress since 9/11.

WhIsBe, Vandal Gummy Blue & Red

Some of the artists featured in the gallery include Bradley Theodore, Layer Cake, Rubin451, Logan Hicks, Stickymonger, Sonni, Cern, Hugo Bastidas, Lauren Ys, L.E.G., Itaewon and Ron English, and WhIsBe. His piece, Vandal Gummy Blue & Red, is a playful nod at street art’s past life as acts of vandalism, while Ron English’s piece, No Brain No Pain, is a powerful punch of reality and color.

Fans of Hamilton can even find quotes from the hit musical in the very fabric of David Hollier’s $10 Bill, which faces the direction of the Trinity Church cemetery where the Founding Father himself is buried. Fortunately, Spotify — who will eventually occupy the space — plans to keep as many of the pieces as they can. Downtown recommends art fans of all ages check out the 3D tour available online to see the work of those keeping New York creative and colorful.

Artist Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi Brings the Whimsy of the Big Apple to Milan

Chiara Spagnoli
Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi

Capturing the whimsy and raw creativity that draw so many to New York is no easy task. Italian contemporary artist Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi presents her playful interpretation of the Big Apple’s persona today at The Black Sheep art gallery in the San Cristoforo neighborhood of Milan. Along with 11 other international artists, called “SuperStars,” curator Paola Omboni aims to showcase the diversity of New York-inspired art.

“Snow White in the Big Apple”

Gabardi recently concluded her fourth exhibition at the Ward Nasse Gallery in SoHo as part of the 10th edition of Women in Art curated by Leda Maria Prado. After the exhibition’s opening night, she will remain in her hometown to resume her professorship at Milan’s I.E.D. University where she teaches a Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts course.

“A Big Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away”

Gabardi’s artistic career began as a hobby during her college years while she earned a degree in political science from Luiss Guido Carli University in Rome. Completely self-taught, she finally gathered the courage to exhibit 30 of her pieces in Milan in 2010 after receiving positive feedback from friends and family.

“I was very coy and bashful about it. I never really thought this could become a profession,” Gabardi confessed.

She also wears several other hats as a film critic, journalist for the Italian and American press, art professor, screenwriter, and filmmaker.

“iBig Apple”

The artist defines her paintings as “Material Puns,” a combination of mixed media that relates playfully and ironically to the title of the piece. Her style has been likened to the Dada movement and Pop Art, while her use of recycled materials has earned her the label of an “eco-artist.”

“I’m trying to up-cycle and give [materials] a new meaning and a new purpose,” she explained.

Six of Gabardi’s seven pieces in SuperStar’s exhibition also embody the relationship between materials and names.

“Every time I’d go back to Milan, I’d bring all sorts of wonderful experiences from New York. During the course of the years, I made several Material Puns about the Big Apple with the actual reference to the apple we all eat, and to New York City,” she said.

The only piece that deviates from this symbolism is titled, “American Lifestyle,” and what Gabardi defines as a tribute to America, rather than just New York City.

“American Lifestyle”

“We could say [the U.S. is] a country on wheels, and I tried to channel that message through my painting,” she explained.

Yet, on the whole, Gabardi’s artistic relationship with New York City is a positive and very personal one.

“It can be a bit fatiguing at times because she can be a bit like a school mistress. She puts you to the test, and you really have to prove yourself worthy. When you do put in all that effort, she proves to be very generous,” she explained.

In the future, Gabardi plans to exhibit her work in Asia. For now, she hopes those who attend the SuperStars exhibition will enjoy her playfully ironic interpretation of New York City. It is, after all, the apple of her eye.

@Eyesores Exhibition Brings Monsters To Life

d_eat_digital

From July 17th through July 20th, SPREADhouse NY will host Xavier Gallego’s AKA @Eyesores first US solo exhibit entitled “The Sleep of Reason Produces Eyesores.” The unique pieces of art feature creatures from Gallego’s imagination and often contain hidden messages that seek to bring a smile to the viewer’s face (and succeed easily.)

Gallego’s interest in “eyesores” goes way back. Unlike many children who fear monsters, Gallego couldn’t get enough of the creatures. Growing up in Barcelona, he spent his days sketching away pictures of monsters that he would dream up. After graduating from Barcelona’s top design school, IDEP, Gallego worked as Multimedia Director at one of Barcelona’s most innovate advertising agencies as well as serving as a chief designer for multiple start-ups. Since moving to New York, he has worked for R/GA as a creative director on experience design, creating award winning experiences for Nike and Samsung.

Gallego is a modern artist in all senses of the word. Inspired by a generation of street artists that paint on physical walls, @Eyesores paints on Facebook walls. His use of social media transforms spectators into participants by allowing them to view Instragram as a personal gallery or exchange postcards via Twitter.

What: “The Sleep of Reason Produces Eysores” exhibition by @Eyesores.

When: July 17th to July 20th, 2014.

Where: SPREADhouse NY. 116 Suffolk Street. Greenwich Village.
