Peppermint Stick Ice Cream Memories

Humans are always searching for universal truths, because in spite of this chaotic and divided world, most people seek the things that tie us together rather than rip us apart. The late, and sorely missed Anthony Bourdain understood this – in fact that was his mission statement. He believed, as I do, that our cultural food traditions are more similar than different, and that sharing the fellowship of a meal creates a bond that nothing can sever, and connects us to our history more effectively than any DNA report. Which brings me to the subject of peppermint stick ice cream.

It’s no secret that I love ice cream. And it isn’t a just a summer love either. Year-round fan, right here. And of all the flavors in the universe, peppermint stick is my favorite. When I find it on a menu or in a freezer, I always want it. There is something irresistible about the mix of velvety, cream-colored vanilla contrasting with crunchy, icy, MINTY bits of bright pink peppermint. The vanilla says “I’m sophisticated and smooth” and the peppermint says “WAKE UP IT’S CHRISTMAS ALL YEAR ROUND!” When done well, it is the perfect mix, and when my favorite ice cream shop, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, added it to their seasonal menu, I had to go in and give it a try. I was not disappointed, it’s delightfully creamy with just the right amount of pink peppermint. Believe me, I’m pretty much a peppermint stick ice cream connoisseur at this point.

But my love of peppermint stick is more than just ice cream-obsession. It reminds me of family – summer car rides, boisterous holidays, a burger at the local Friendly’s or the clam strip dinner at Howard Johnson’s, both ending with peppermint stick ice cream, of course. I can’t remember which now, but one of them had green-tinted ice cream with red peppermint, which didn’t seem right somehow, but still tasted great. It has become a seasonal flavor now, sadly, but in those days it was a year-round treat.

Peppermint stick was my sister Claudia’s favorite flavor really, and that’s why I seek it out whenever the Christmas season rolls around. It connects me to her in a way that no photograph can ever do. She was taken from us too young, but she is ever-present for me, especially at this time of year.

And that’s what food does best. It connects us to our past, to our future, and to each other, across time and cultures and continents, without regard to borders, geography, religion, ethnicity, or politics. Anthony Bourdain wasn’t the first to make this connection, just the most prolifically tattooed. Marcel Proust’s madeleine memories in In Search of Lost Time (or Remembrance of Things Past, as it is more commonly known) are so eternally relevant that you can use the phrase “Proustian moment” in casual conversation and make your point, even to people who have not read the seven-volume masterwork.

This holiday season, may you find your own peppermint stick ice cream. Or madeleine. Or tonkotsu ramen. Whatever it is, enjoy it with gusto, secure in the knowledge that you are connected to the past, to the future, and to the rest of humanity. Happy Holidays!

The 3rd Annual American Craft Council Rare Craft Fellowship Awards, in association with The Balvenie Scotch Whisky, honored four remarkable craftspeople in their respective trades with the help of famous chef and Balvenie spokesperson, Anthony Bourdain, yesterday at Le Bernandin.

Bourdain and The Balvenie recently announced their multifaceted collaboration with the intention of bringing to light some of America’s finest craftspeople. Though Bourdain has done plenty of shows all over television, this partnership with The Balvenie is his first.

“I’ve been approached by a lot of companies and brands to work with them on all different kinds of projects but never did it,” Bourdain told DOWNTOWN through email correspondence. “I was waiting for the right phone call, the right thing and when I heard from The Balvenie, a brand I personally like, and heard about the concept—celebrating lone wolf craftspeople, doing things the long, hard old school way, I thought, okay. This is it.”

One of his main roles within the partnership includes being a lead juror for the American Craft Council Rare Craft Fellowship Awards. This year, the award was presented to Fellow Bob Kramer, a bladesmith who has put in an exceptional amount of time and precision into perfecting his craft. The winner receives an exclusive trip to Scotland to see The Balvenie distillery, as well as an endowment of $10,000 to go towards materials to continue their crafts. The additional finalists will receive a $5,000 endowment.

According to Bourdain, individuals must demonstrate a contribution to the preservation of traditional and rare craft techniques, processes, or products, and meet a quality criterion to be considered for the Fellowship.

“The award, presented annually, recognizes one winner and several finalists for their recognition and support of contributions to the maintenance and revival of traditional or rare crafts in America,” Bourdain said. “I was able to serve as lead juror for the selection process which was a difficult one as many were very deserving of this honor, but we’re happy with those selected for 2015.”

Also included in this partnership is a series of short films called Raw Craft, hosted by Bourdain, in which viewers get an inside glimpse to the workshops of some of the most creative and hardworking craftspeople in America. The 2015 Balvenie Rare Craft Collection, a traveling exhibition, will also feature Bourdain being an integral part in selecting a first class group of artisans dedicated to making handcrafted goods.

Luckily, DOWNTOWN had the privilege of attending the award luncheon with their Advisory Board member Luigi Rosabianca and CEO/Publisher Grace A. Capobianco to witness the achievements of these remarkable artists who have perfected their respective trades. The ceremony and lunch was beautiful, filled with plenty of inspiration, great food, and plenty of Balvenie whisky! It was an honor for us to be involved in the commemoration and celebration of such fine craftspeople and artists alike.

Hudson Yards To Feature International Food Court

A world-class food court is anticipated when the mini-city, known as Hudson Yards opens for business in 2018.

The highly-anticipated, massive mixed-use development project which has been modeled on the success of Battery Park City, is expected to open an Eataly-style food court called, “The Kitchens.” The food court would occupy the space on the fourth floor of the 75,000-square-foot retail space inside the enormous complex. “The Kitchens” will feature internationally prepared cuisines by well-known chefs and local favorites.

Reportedly, the focus at Hudson Yards will be on prepared food from many different vendors, making it sounds more similar to the upcoming Brookfield Place food court or the Gotham West Market.

There has been some speculation that Anthony Bourdain will make this the location for an upcoming international food market venture with New York Entrepreneur Stephen Werther.

The Hudson Yards complex will also feature nine bars and restaurants, casual and formal eateries located on the top floor overlooking the Public Square.
