Gardening with Kids: A PAUSE Activity

By Rachel McMinn, Early Childhood Educator, Buckle My Shoe Preschool
Mar 31, 2020

Bringing nature into your home is a valuable learning experience for your child. Helping a tiny seed to sprout and grow is an experience that imparts empathy, self-sufficiency, connection to the earth, and ability to recognize a life cycle.

Now that the weather is starting to ease up and we are having warmer and sunnier days, it’s the perfect time to start planting with your little one! This project is beginner level and has a very big success rate (we do this in our classroom of two-year-olds each Spring). Even those with a black thumb will find their little seed growing in just a few days right before your eyes.

What do you need?

  • 3 or 4 Dry beans (pinto, navy, kidney, lima* we usually use jumbo lima beans)
  • OR seeds from fruits and veggies you have in your home – apple, lemon, pepper, orange (these will take longer to sprout)
  • A sandwich or quart size ziplock bag
  • A paper towel
  • A small cup of water

Step One:

Before planting, we like to read the book Jack and the Beanstalk. Then our beans/seeds take on a new level of magic and amazement as they grow. After the story, fold the paper towel into a square (1/4 of the normal size).

Step Two:

Place your beans in the fold so it is tucked in like it’s wearing a blanket. The beans are sleeping, after all, and we need a cozy bed and water to wake it up!

Step Three:

Carefully place the “bed” into the ziplock bag.

Step Four:

Pour in a little bit of water to saturate the paper towel. You don’t want a puddle in there, so if your child over pours, simply tip the bag and get the extra water out. Seal the bag.

Step Five:

Hang the ziplock bag on a sunny window with a piece of tape.

Step Six:

Wait a few days and you should see some growing happening!! When the beanstalk gets large enough that it’s near the top of the bag, open it up and let it keep growing. When you get to this point, you will need to add more water for the bean to continue growing.

Step Seven:

Now that your bean is big and strong you can plant it in a pot with soil and continue to love and care for it.

Rachel McMinn is an early childhood educator at Buckle My Shoe Preschool in Tribeca, who has taught the young 2 year olds for almost nine years. She holds a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College and a Writing degree from Pratt Institute. She lives in Brooklyn with her daughter, post-production & screenwriting husband, and two attention-seeking cats.

Get Your Tickets to This Summer’s Bigger and Better Rosé Mansion Today

Rosé Mansion, the wine tasting experience dedicated to the history and allure of the pink-hued, warm-weather favorite, launches an all-new experience for 2019. Building off of last summer’s sold-out run, guests looking for a shareable and fun experience that takes wine tasting and education to a whole new level will have multiple opportunities to dive into the 7,000-year history and resurgence of rosé, one of the most popular wines on the market today.

The all-new Rosé Mansion will bring the pink from around the world to a picture-perfect experience in New York City. Taking over 32,000 square feet (over twice the size of last year’s Mansion), Rosé Mansion will feature a labyrinth of 14 rooms for wine lovers to explore, learn and ‘gram, including Cleopatra’s Palace, a 1960s-themed Acid Test, and a vintage Airline Lounge.

Following a self-guided tour, guests can enjoy the Mansion’s “RoséLand.” Expanded extensively for 2019, RoséLand is part playground, part party space, where New York’s largest selection of Rosé wine meets the ultimate celebration destination. Attendees can purchase bottles and glasses of their favorite wines and other beverages while enjoying private cabanas, a tree house and picnic area, tacos, and snacks from Taco Dumbo, and interactive elements such as chandelier swings and photo booths. A retail space and gift shop, open to the public, rounds out the experience.

Here’s a sneak peek at a few of the new rooms in Rosé Mansion NYC:

Vineyard Installation: Soon after arriving, guests will be transported right into the middle of a vineyard, surrounded by rows of grapevines. After walking through a mirror-lined maze, each guest picks up their own, personalized Govino wine glass for their tasting journey.

Choose Your Own Adventure Sweet Wine: Guests will follow a flow chart to find their own biological preferences for sweet or bitter flavors. At the end, each guest’s tasting sample will depend on how they answered the questions.

Cleopatra’s Palace: Go back in time to Ancient Egypt to learn about Cleopatra’s penchant for Brachetto wine and live like a queen. Guests will lounge on thrones while they sip Brachetto in a truly luxurious sensory experience, as the scent of spices and oils from Ancient Egypt mingle with lush fabrics, art, and artifacts.

Celebration Room: Rosé is made for celebrating, whether it’s birthdays, weddings, graduations, or just every day. Glitter cannons, a giant cake, giant furniture, bright colors, firework imagery, and other surprises will make each guest feel like the life of the party.

Traditional Winery: Drink wine straight from the tank as Rose Mansion ambassadors share details on how wine is produced. This room will have giant wine barrels and the look and feel of a traditional wine tasting room, with infographics and dioramas explaining the wine-making process.

In addition to the wine tasting tour and access to RoséLand, Rosé Mansion will offer an ongoing series of wine tasting workshops, touching on rosé varietals, unusual grapes, Wines from New York State, France vs California, Southern Hemisphere Favorites, and an Exclusive Champagne Tasting.

Rosé Mansion’s new home takes over the entire second floor of the Manhattan Mall, where it will have a private entrance and address at 111 W. 32nd Street, near Penn Station.

Tickets are on sale today, April 16th, and range from $35–$45, but if you buy before April 21st you get a $10 discount on all ticket purchases. Food, wine, and private cabanas in RoséLand can be reserved for an additional fee. The Top Three Trendy NYC Museums You Don’t Want to Miss

New York City: the city of pizza, bagels, yellow taxis and museums. Yes, museums! New York City is home to dozens and dozens of amazing and unique museums which you can find nowhere else. There’s a museum for everyone; from classic historical museums, to museums of math, and even to museums of sex, there is truly a museum to explore to fit anybody’s tastes. We’ve curated a list of three of the trendiest NYC museums that you should not miss out on visiting.

THE TOP THREE TRENDY MUSEUMS IN NYC YOU NEED TO VISIT

1. THE TENEMENT MUSEUM

There is no easier way to time travel than to visit the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. On a guided tour, you will step into the real homes of America’s past families, some of which date back to the 1800s! It is amazing how well these tenements have been preserved. This museum is perhaps the most historically authentic museum in New York. You will leave this museum with vast amounts of new knowledge. Pro tip: don’t miss out on the gift shop! It’s got some really great and rare finds.

2. MUSEUM OF FOOD AND DRINK

Calling all foodies! This trendy museum will be a dream for you. Head to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to visit the Museum of Food and Drink, or MOFAD. Seriously, why hasn’t anyone thought of this sooner? Stimulating the senses of smell, touch, and taste, MOFAD is one of a kind. Food is truly a common denominator between people of all cultures; we all enjoy it, and we all need it. So why not learn more about it? Some upcoming events at MOFAD include a Bean Cookery with Brooks Headley (great for vegetarians), and a Food Fracas with Mark Kurlansky (great for parents who want to learn more about food choices for their children).

.

3. MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS

I know, I know – you’re probably thinking, “A museum of math? Nothing could possibly sound more boring”, but I promise you, this museum is FUN! The Museum of Mathematics, or MoMath, is a great place for adults and children alike. This museum is one of the most interactive in the city, and with its trendy NOMAD location, this place makes for a great day’s activity. You will learn about math in the most entertaining way possible. (Be sure to take advantage of child, student, and senior discounts!)
