Pine Street School: A Green Ivy School

DSC_0022-1500x996

Coming to New York City’s Financial District is a school guaranteed to leave a legacy. Stationed in the remarkable and world-renowned Trump Building is the Pine Street School, which held its grand opening July 17, 2014. The new pre-K – 8th grade school held a preview of what it will bring to the table when it opens in September, and the building was filled with excited families looking forward to what the Green Ivy School has to offer.

Pine Street School is the second in the Green Ivy organization–the first being located in Battery Park–and it was developed by Jennifer Jones, Ph.D. with the mission to “nurture people who can live and work successfully in the 21st century and be responsible and active local and global citizens.”

The school is also focused on becoming a contender for the Primary Years Programme from the International Baccalaureate: an educational institution dedicated to students reaching their full intellectual, personal, and emotional potential. Pine Street School boasts their students are well-connected to the world, because the world is their curriculum.

The Pine Street School is accepting applications for potential students, and the staff is excited to share the redesigned and rejuvenated space to FiDi families.

“Pine Street School is a breath of fresh air educationally, experientially, and architecturally,” Jones said. “It’s an open, joyful environment that creates lifelong results: children who are engaged, invested and compassionate citizens of the world.”

Two Together: School’s Out For Summer!

Kareem Campbell, Graduating Senior at Brooklyn Technical High School

The Jewish Child Care Association held its annual event, School’s Out for Summer, on Thursday June 12th, at the Bubble Lounge, in recognition of the remarkable achievements of their Two Together program during the 2013-2014 school year. The Two Together program provides free one on one tutoring to 130 at-risk students of all ages and ethnic backgrounds in the New York City area. Tutors, who hail from Wall Street banks such as Deutsche Bank, Citi Bank, Goldman Sachs, and more, volunteer their time and knowledge to teach and provide the proper guidance for these at-risk students.

Two Together encourages tutors and students to stray away from the traditional teacher/student relationship and go toward a mentor/mentee relationship, supporting children to successfully take the right steps toward a brighter future.

Khareem Campbell, a student who has been a member of Two Together since 5th grade, spoke about his extraordinary achievements since joining the program. The 90 minute sessions these students are given “prove that people really make a difference and the world is not indifferent”, Khareem attests. From a very young age, Campbell struggled with school. However, after joining the program and receiving one-on-one attention and support from his tutors, Kelly Brennan from Goldman Sachs and Ben Bruno from Deutsche Bank, he was able to raise his scores, learn a range of different subjects, including biology and engineering, and evolve into a better version of himself.

At the event, Khareem’s mother read a touching letter that she wrote to express her gratitude for the role Two Together has played in shaping her son’s future. Mrs. Campbell stated, “it takes a village to raise a child, and Two Together has been a huge part of that village in Khareem’s life.”

Léman Manhattan’s Innovative ‘Geneva Exchange’ Program

High school sophomore Sophie Stoch is one of five Léman Manhattan students who is currently participating in the private school’s “Geneva Exchange,” and recently returned from a three-week total immersion program in Switzerland.  Tatiana Turincev, one of her French-speaking Swiss counterparts who attends the Collège du Léman in Geneva, is one of five students spending the next three weeks in New York immersing themselves in the English language and life in New York City.  The two girls were paired as “buddies,” meaning Sophie stayed with Tatiana’s family in Switzerland, and Tatiana is now living with Sophie’s family in the Financial District.   The international match-up was a pleasant surprise to both girls, who actually knew each other from attending the same summer camp!

While Sophie enjoyed a week-long ski trip in the French Alps during her stay with Tatiana’s family, Tatiana is now enjoying everything New York has to offer, including walks across the Brooklyn Bridge, shopping excursions, riding the Staten Island Ferry, attending a Broadway play, and, of course, eating out!

Léman is one of the few schools in New York with established sister campuses in Europe and Asia, and provides the only international high school boarding program in New York City.  Testament to its dedication of providing a truly global academic experience,  Léman Manhattan is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, universally recognized by more than 1,800 universities representing 75 countries.
