Pisterzi: Cutting Through the Chaff

Pisterzi Italian Grooming Art changes the way New York men look at grooming with a unique approach to the barbershop experience.

  

An unlikely shelter hides in the heart of downtown. Freezing winds, erratic snows, and city stress fall away in Pisterzi Italian Grooming Art’s latest Atelier, an authentic Italian barbershop in SOHO that brings new levels to the barbershop experience. Italian Master Barber Gian Antonio Pisterzi, the company’s founder, created Pisterzi Italian Grooming Art to make his own mark with an Italian style unique to the city with locations in Milan and NYC. His newest location, at 367 W Broadway, is the first to match with the colors and textures of his brand, a space that he can claim as his own. The new space embraces an intimate boutique feel of a sanctuary, which Pisterzi aims to enhance with the shop’s two private rooms where clients can enjoy one-on-one services and get pampered by the expert hands of Pisterzi barbers. Pisterzi wants to create a bubble that lets both parties focus on the barbershop experience, and to let all else fall to the wayside. 

“The grooming market has grown in the past years” says Gian Antonio Pisterzi. “More men are now taking time for themselves and do not look for a simple haircut anymore. Throughout my experience, I came to know and understand better the desires and needs of customers and I have been trying to translate them into the services we provide at the ateliers. Opening a second location in the Big Apple was a step that I was longing to take, and doing it in the energetic heart of New York, felt like the right choice to make.”

Pisterzi Italian Grooming Art has also launched a new line of high-end products, which includes gels, serums, conditioners for beard and hair, cosmetics with multiple functions, and more specific treatments. The launch will also include three fragrances entirely created and produced in Italy. Born within an elegant and sophisticated Italian lifestyle, the products will also be sustainable: they will use 100% recycled paper, post-consumer aluminum, and will have reusable, refillable containers. 

Pisterzi is a graduate of the prestigious Steiner Academy in London and a beholder of extensive experience as an international Master Barber in luxury brands such as Dolce & Gabbana and Acqua di Parma. Just recently, he added to his board Andrea Pirlo, the Internationally renowned soccer champion. Pirlo, who is a big aficionado of cosmetic products for personal care and well-being, faces this new challenge with enthusiasm: “I had the pleasure of personally meeting Gian Antonio Pisterzi in New York and I was struck by the culture expressed by his know-how and unique care that Barberia Pisterzi offers to its customers. I immediately wished I could be the protagonist of this enterprise which, today, evolves through a range of high-level products and a restyling of the barbershops in a sustainable way.”

5. Trim the nose hairs – yes, it sounds trivial and basic but it can make difference whether you get a second date 
6. Tailor your clothes -we don’t want to think you’re wearing your father or uncle’s hand-me-downs. The right fit is sexy, no matter your size
7. Take the time to match your belt to your shoes – if you have a pair of black and brown dress shoes and a black and brown belt you are on the right track.
8. Hands, keep your nails grooming and short – if you cannot clip them then book an appointment with the nearest spa, you may even meet the one

What to Consider Before Getting a Short Haircut

The thought of getting rid of your luscious locks can be scary. Especially if you have spent years with long hair and don’t know yourself any other way. After all, there is so much comfort in the familiar. Who hasn’t gone into the hair salon with big ideas for a makeover and then chickened out at the last minute and just asked for a trim!

What’s Your Usual Hair Routine?


Would you describe yourself as high maintenance or low maintenance when it comes to your hair? You might think that going short might reduce the time spent styling your hair, but in fact, short hair requires a bit of styling too.

A leader in France since 2001, EKOI is coming to the USA. 

EKOI has become synonymous with winning in the professional and amateur cycling ranks.  Their strategy for the past 20 years was to make quality cycling equipment with an emphasis on reduced price and increased accessibility.  This year’s Tour de France saw 4 teams wearing EKOI products. 

The Tour has always been a stage for revealing the newest cycling gear and this year EKOI unveiled its latest helmet, the Gara.  It will become available soon and I have plans to review it for DOWNTOWN.

The latest addition to their helmet inventory is the AERO14.  This helmet was the preferred helmet worn by professional teams Arkea Samsic, Cofidis, Lotto Soudal, and Qhubeka Assos in this year’s Tour de France. It has also been spotted in numerous other professional and amateur races.  It is currently on display by four teams in the Vuelta a España.  Considered an aero helmet, the AR14 has ten vents and comes in three sizes. 

Like its predecessor the AR13, it was designed and tested in a wind tunnel.   It is as light, more aero, protective, and ergonomic than its ancestor.  Originally used exclusively by sprinters, aero helmets have become increasingly popular in the pro peloton due to their lightweight, style, and comfort.

I was fortunate to recently obtain the AR14 model from EKOI.  My experience as a road cyclist spans more than three decades and I have worn many helmets during that time.  Most have been the standard vented road helmet. 

This was my first experience wearing an aero model.  As a resident of central Florida, where heat and humidity are always present, I was more than skeptical.  I have been wearing this helmet solely throughout the blistering hot summer months and it has more than delivered.    

The cool max foam padding coupled with its dial fit system and adjustable up/down fit to allow it to be remarkably comfortable.  The ventilation, clearly my biggest concern, has been exceptional.  Its 10 airflow vents have allowed my head to remain cool. That is the ultimate test for any helmet in the sweltering heat of a Florida summer.

All in all, I cannot find anything negative with Ekoi’s latest addition.  From its stylish looks to the magnetic closing buckle, this helmet checks all of the boxes.  I now understand why many professional riders have adopted the use of aero helmets for everyday riding.
