Martin Kesselman Leads in Color Coaching

AT HIS TRIBECA SHOWROOM, INCOLOUR Martin Kesselman leads in color coaching his clients, helping them select a color palette that reflects their lifestyle, personality, and space. “We are really trying to create a story or mood for their space.”

As a native New Yorker, Kesselman had a front row seat to the city’s ever-evolving art scene, especially within his childhood neighborhoods, Chelsea and Brooklyn. “I always had the drive to be creative but I never wanted to be a struggling artist, so I became an entrepreneur in color,” he says. He developed a fascination for design while working at art galleries in lower Manhattan. “I got to know some of the art collectors and was intrigued by how they were displaying big contemporary art in a gallery-esque way in their homes,” he explains.

TriBeCa, he says, is undergoing an art movement. “This is the next place it is going to happen. I like a little grit, I like diversity, and I think it’s inspiring to be around all of these artists. I still consider myself one. I still like getting my hands dirty.”

Kesselman’s showroom is part gallery, part workshop, part traditional paint store, and color drives the aesthetic. The storefront is equipped with workspaces to invite designers, architects, and clients to work alongside him when evaluating color. “The house of color, as I sometimes call it, has the best of the best,” he says. “I wanted other designers to come and bring clients, fabrics, plans, and to spend time with me and utilize my color tools. It’s not often that you can walk in off the street and speak with a design professional and get expert advice.”

Kesselman is adept at creating moods by playing with finish and texture in addition to color. He also utilizes areas that are often overlooked like the ceiling, “the 5th wall.” He uses color to not only complement the art inside homes but to create it himself. His passion for his subject is all-encompassing—from designing interiors to imagining entirely new colors in his role as ambassador with luxury paint brand Farrow and Ball. His latest creation, Elliyah, is a peaceful, nuanced white, an antidote to the frenetic pace of downtown living. This dreamy hue is a reminder to clients—and Kesselman himself—to slow down.

Peace and livability are two ideas Kesselmen stressed in creating a new set of Fine Paints of Europe colors tailored specifically for Downtown living. These selections contrast the busy and lively streets of New York with comforting neutrals. “Some colors are complex and living with them is a more active experience. This is about finding balance,” Kesselman says. “People have busy lives, myself included, and sometimes you just want to escape, or you want to go home and feel serenity. That’s what I want for my clients, to have a pleasant and happy experience.”

A Conversation with Britt Baron of GLOW

The gorgeous ladies of Netflix’s GLOW will be slamming, pinning, and jumping their way into a third season. The comedy show follows the lives of newbie women wrestlers, and the obstacles these women face in their personal lives and professional wrestling careers. GLOW is loosely based on an actual 1980’s women’s professional wrestling circuit. Like the original wrestlers, Netflix’s GLOW girls endure the glory, and grit, of being a professional wrestler in 1985.

Netflix recently announced that GLOW will be returning for another 10 episode season. Britt Baron, who plays “Justine” on the show, offers insight into what she hopes to see in the upcoming season. The third season differs from the first two in that it takes place in a brand new setting. “We are starting fresh in a way. There will be so many new ways for the women to interact in a fresh environment and that is something that the real GLOW girls went through”, she explains.

“I think that the first season was such a slow burn. We had so much to establish. We really had a huge task in front of us. We were so fortunate in Season 2 because so much was established. We got to be an up and running show, and we got to see the girls actually get to wrestle” says Baron. She anticipates that Season 3 will offer even more opportunities to develop the personalities of the individual wrestlers and to see growth within the bonds between these characters.

Season 3 may develop the bonds between characters on GLOW, but the relationship between the actresses portraying the wrestlers has been well established. “To be on a show with all these women feels like a blessing. I love everyone and that’s the best part of this show”, says Baron.

“It is a dream. I think it is because we train for four weeks before we start shooting. You are physically relying on someone else, you have to rely on someone to catch you when you are flipping over or jumping on someone. Learning new moves can be embarrassing, and frustrating, and we all go through that together. I think we have created such a strong bond, and for most of us, GLOW is a big break. We have such a team mentality. We are always cheering each other on, even when we aren’t on those scenes, which I think is rare. It’s a group of really supportive, amazing women who are strong, intelligent, driven and in it for the right reasons. I love being on an ensemble where we all get to shine and to support each other.”

Britt Baron and many of the other members of the cast did not begin GLOW with extensive training, or even basic knowledge of wrestling. “I actually wasn’t allowed to watch wrestling growing up. I was really unfamiliar with the wrestling world. We do all of our own stunts and we train for four weeks before we start shooting”, per Baron. “I think we all have a real respect for wrestling, what wrestlers go through, what they put their bodies through, and how emotionally taxing it is”

GLOW has a unique charm that makes the show incredibly addictive, and hilarious. Knowing that the cast is extremely dedicated to training, and are supportive of each other, as they are in the show, will only make GLOW more likely to be your new favorite, binge-worthy, series

Circuit of Change: A New Approach to Fitness

A class at Circuit of Change will leave your mind surprisingly clear, and your body unsurprisingly sweaty.  “Circuit of Change is a full body workout that targets core, flexibility, strength, and stamina. We integrate rolling and primal movements along with yoga and kickboxing to keep the body stimulated and the mind challenged. We also incorporate mindfulness and meditation. Every class is different which keeps the class fun and interesting”, said Brian Delmonico, the founder of Circuit of Change.

The studio offers something for everybody and every mind. Instructors push students to reach their highest level of athletic intensity in a manner that is conscious of spirituality. Throughout the course, instructors remind students to “trust their bodies”, to be confident and aware of how powerful and capable their bodies are. It is obvious that students also learn to trust their instructor’s ability to deliver a rejuvenating, and challenging experience in every class.

Circuit of Change approaches mind and body wellness in an innovative and dynamic way. Brian Delmonico explains, “My approach was to use the physical intensity of movement, and this unique hybrid class to reach a state of euphoria where people could fully let go and receive the benefits of yoga/meditation and healing. Nothing beats seeing and feeling a shift take place in someone right before your eyes.”

Brian Delmonico hopes that all who enter the studio, “take away a sense of peace and calm, and leave class feeling stronger, connected, and more alive with positive energy.”

After a class, you will feel tranquil and confident. The next day, you will feel sore.

Sunni Spencer: A Boutique or a Vacation?

When thinking of warm weather fashion, many think of comfortable, bright, and whimsical pieces. If only the joy that comes from sunny days and summer style could last all year. Thankfully, at  Sunni Spencer in the West Village, the bliss of summer attire continues throughout the year.

Sunni Spencer curates home decor, clothing, and accessories from all over the world. Her carefully selected items cater to the beach lover in everyone. Spencer takes inspiration for her boutique from travels in Mykonos, Anguilla, and the Bahamas.  Her New York storefront will convince all who enter that they too have made a tropical escape.

“Its a little getaway in New York. Everyone says it feels like they are on vacation when they are in here. That is totally what we want. We hear it every day. People feel like they escaped the bustling hard concrete city of New York and that they have come into this fresh environment,” says Spencer.

This summer season, pom-poms, baskets, tassels and rotunda bags all decorated the city streets with carefree vibes. These trendy items do not have to be banished to the back of your closet in preparation for the Fall. Spencer explains, “its cool to carry baskets all year round. Especially for the beach lover anyway.”

For Fall, Spencer suggests “mixing earthy tones with something light and fresh. I love chocolate brown with an off-white for example. Pair darks with whites or pastels.”  Thus, your beloved light, summer pieces can easily be converted into versatile fall favorites.

Although chocolate brown will be trending in the Fall, Spencer warns that “in general it’s about finding things that are flattering and that will last you instead of following trends.”

Sunni Spencer’s boutique radiates relaxing feelings. The music, smells, and color palette in Sunni Spencer all work together to create an ambiance that screams summer relaxation. As Spencer says, her boutique is a “destination to feel like you have escaped, to feel like you are on vacation. Who does not love being on vacation? It can be a pillow for your home, a candle that smells amazing, or something you are wearing. ” An item purchased at Sunni Spencer is an item with the power to remind you of happy days spent in the sun, regardless of the weather or the season.

Exhibition Costas Picadas Odon Wagner

Costas Picadas exhibition explores the limits of reality through dreamlike photographs. The Odon Wagner Gallery of Ontario will host Picadas’ first Canadian exhibition, from September 27th through October 20th, so that Canada too can experience Picadas’ unique collections.

Costas Picadas Artist

The exhibition at Odon Wagner will feature 17 photographs, all of which depict scenes that are familiar yet hypnotically alien.  Picadas captures both natural, and urban landscapes. Picadas’ use of architectural elements and nature, coupled with his technological techniques, yields images that feel classic but experiment with the digital world. Picadas highlights the often overlooked significance of familiar surroundings through such techniques.

Although his images are appealing, what is most captivating about Picadas’ work is what is left out of the image. What remains unshown, like who lives in some of these obscure buildings, prompts the viewer to question the reality of the time and space depicted in the photographs. The observer is placed into Picadas’ potentially alternative reality, engulfing the viewer in the unknown.

Picadas is applauded for his ability to create surreal images that incorporate light, philosophy, science, and energy into art. Thus he stimulates the mind, and sensation, in tandem.

Costas Picadas was born in Ioannina, Greece. However, he now lives and works in New York City. His Greek roots, and New York experiences, have both influenced his art.  “I’ve been living in NY for 25 years, so most of the work comes from regions in New York City as well as from my homeland in Greece”, says Picadas.

Picadas is excited about “the opportunity to reach out to the Canadian population, to introduce them to my work, and to get their reactions”.

Costas Picadas has been featured in many local venues such as the Queens Museum, the Budman Gallery, and the Denise Bibro Gallery. As Picadas expands his artistic influence into Canada, more individuals get the pleasure of viewing sophisticated and intellectual art.
