A new documentary centering around the late folk singer, Harry Chapin, is set to be released on November 4th, entitled Harry Chapin – Cat’s in the Cradle: The Song That Changed Our Lives. The film is in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Chapin’s hit song, “Cat’s in the Cradle,” and its everlasting influence across the world and generations. Following stories from his family, celebrities, and impacted fans, this new documentary will pull at your heart strings and remind you of Chapin and this song’s legacy.
The film is directed by Rick Korn, who also directed Harry Chapin: When in Doubt, Do Something, and produced by S.A. Baron and Chapin’s son, Jason Chapin. Featuring interviews with Billy Joel, Pat Benatar, Darryl McDaniels from Run DMC, and Whitfield Crane from Ugly Kid Joe, the film shows how not only this song but Harry himself has made incredible impacts on fellow musicians. The documentary features different covers of the song as well.

Not only has “Cat’s in the Cradle” influenced the music world, Chapin’s song has also affected society across generations. The film features special clips from TV shows and movies of the song being used and appreciated. Additionally, something I really enjoyed about this film was the inclusion of videos, whether on TikTok or YouTube, of people reacting to this song for the first time. Director Rick Korn described this song as having a “multi-generational effect,” and I think the reaction videos really embodied this aspect.
Although Chapin passed in 1981 at 38 years old, his legacy is carried on through his family. Harry’s widow, Sandra Chapin, is at the core of “Cat’s in the Cradle,” as it all began with a poem she wrote. His children are also featured in the film, including Jennifer and Joshua Chapin as well as his son, Jason Chapin.

Harry Chapin was a big activist for ending world hunger, and he co-founded WhyHunger, which is a nonprofit providing resources to grassroots organizations across the country. He also founded Long Island Cares, another nonprofit charity, which aims to provide food security to those struggling in Long Island. Both organizations, as well as the Harry Chapin Foundation, will be benefited from this documentary.
